5-HTP Dosage and Supplement Instructions

As a supplement, 5-HTP comes from the seeds of an African shrub known as Griffonia simplicifolia. These supplements are not the same as L-tryptophan supplements, which may also increase serotonin levels.L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid found in protein-rich foods, such as dairy products, poultry, meat, chickpeas and soybeans.

On the other hand, 5-HTP is not present in foods and can only be added to your diet through a supplement. The recommended dose for 5-HTP depends on your reason for taking it.

When to take 5 htp for depression

Some research shows that using 5-HTP for depression may help improve depressive symptoms. 5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is an amino acid that our bodies produce from a dietary amino acid called l-tryptophan.

It can be converted into the mood-regulating neurotransmitter called serotonin, which can then be converted to the sleep-inducing hormone known as melatonin. 5-HTP may also be synthesized in the laboratory by extracting it from the seeds of the plant Griffonia simplicifolia.

Taking 5-HTP by month seems to improve symptoms of depression in some people. Some clinical research shows that taking 5-HTP by month might be as beneficial as certain prescription antidepressant drugs for improving depression symptoms. In most studies, 150-800 mg daily of 5-HTP was taken.

Dosage Information

If you are just beginning to supplement with 5-HTP, Dr. Bowden recommends taking 50 mg, three times a day for the first two weeks. Ideally, you should take it 8 hours apart. You do not have to take this supplement with food, however. After two weeks, you and your doctor can evaluate its effectiveness and perhaps increase the dose if it is not effective. Dr. Bowden states that a common dose for depression is 300 mg, or 100 mg doses taken three times a day. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 5-HTP may also be useful as an insomnia treatment, taken at a dosage of 200 to 400 mg before going to sleep.
