1. Echinacea Purpurea Extract - Polyphenols
Echinacea Purpurea Extract is the most widely medicinal plant and is commonly used for cold, toothache, snake bites and other trauma. The United States has used it for many years as an alternative medicine to enhance the immune system and clear blood, especially in time of seasonal changes and frequent episodes of cold and cough.
Full Text Available A rapid and sensitive Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method was developed and validated to simultaneously determine the concentration of seven phenolic acids (syringic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid in rat plasma after oral administration of echinacea purpurea extract. After mixing with the internal standard (IS, butylparaben, plasma samples were prepared by liquid–liquid extraction with ethyl acetate.
The separation was performed using the Agilent Eclipse Plus C18 column (1.8 μm, 2.1 mm × 50 mm with a gradient system consisting of solution A (0.1% acetic acid in water and solution B (methanol at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. The detection was accomplished by a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM mode with electrospray ionization (ESI. The method was validated in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy, extraction recovery, matrix effect and stability. This method was successfully applied to study the pharmacokinetic properties of the seven compounds after oral administration of Echinacea extract in rats.
Echinacea purpurea is a flowering plant native to North America. It is one of several species of Echinacea used as a dietary supplement—others include E. angustifolia and E. pallida. E. purpurea was used by Native Americans for a variety of purposes, but it’s reputation as an immune tonic date to the Eclectics (specialists in botanicals from the late 1800’s). This reputation has endured: E. purpurea is one of the most widely used herbal immune tonics. The roots, flowering tops, or combinations of both can be used. We consider the roots as a better choice for long-term use. E. purpurea root extracts support an overall healthy immune system, essentially acting as an immune adaptogen. While the roots have a number of compounds[1,2], the complex arabinogalactan polysaccharides support innate immune cells in ways that are consistent with trained immunity. This means that root extracts provide a challenge for immune cells, which adapt to become fitter and more efficient.
Echinacea Purpurea polyphenols is one of the most important immune active ingredients. Recent studies have shown that chicory acid has enhanced immune function and anti-inflammatory effects, and can inhibit hyaluronidase and protect collagen from free radicals that can cause degradation. Echinacea is one of the plant medicines that has very specific and clear therapeutic indicators for many diseases at the same time. Echinacea is the only deep immune substance in nature that has the effect of "preserving bone marrow" and significantly improves and maintains autoimmunity.
