Saposhnikoviae Radix,Pastinaca sativa, Fang Feng, a widely known herb in Traditional Oriental Medicine, seems to be a cornucopia of biologically active natural substances that can benefit human health. Such biochemical diversity reflects the versatility of its traditional therapeutic effects. The herb was used to relieve arthritis, the common cold, chills, fevers, and body pains. It was also prescribed for treating wind-heat conditions of the body such as sore throats and headaches.
Saposhnikoviae Radix is commonly called parsnip, is a long-shaped cream-colored root vegetable, a member of the Umbellifarae, and is closely related to carrot, dill, cumin, parsley and caraway. It is native to Eurasia, and has been used as a food since the ancient times. The Greeks and Romans also used the root for medicinal purposes. It is planted before winter as it becomes sweeter in flavour after the winter frosts, and due to its sweetness, it was used as a food sweetner before sugar cane and sugar beet became popular. Fang Feng can be eaten raw or cooked, and as it resembles carrot, it is used in similar ways. It can be baked, boiled, pureed, roasted, fried, or steamed. Roasted parsnip is a popular part of the traditional Christmas dinner in English-speaking cultures.
