What is Allulose?
Allulose is a hexose ketose, an isomer of fructose. Its sweetness is similar to sucrose, but its calorie content is far lower. Allulose is one of many different sugars that exists in nature in very small quantities. It was initially identified from wheat and has since been found in certain fruits including jackfruit, figs and raisins.
Allulose is about 70% as sweet as sucrose. Compared to sucrose, allulose contributes less to the body's calorie intake and does not cause fluctuations in blood sugar or insulin levels. Its glycemic index (GI) is almost zero. Multiple studies have shown that allulose intake not only does not raise blood sugar but may also aid in weight management by inhibiting α-glucosidase activity to slow carbohydrate digestion and absorption, or by regulating the secretion of the gut hormone GLP-1 to enhance satiety and reduce appetite. Allulose was approved as a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) substance in the United States in 2011.
